Frequently Asked Questions About Waxing and Hair Removal:
How
does waxing compare to laser and electrolysis?
Waxing refers to hair removal with the use of hard or soft wax
(sometimes also called cold or hot wax). The wax is applied to
the area, and either allowed to harden then hair and wax are
removed, or a fabric strip is applied, and the hair and wax
removed.
Laser is a direct beam of radiation that penetrates the
epidermis and creates a reaction that damages the hair
follicles. Note: laser cannot be used on skins that may have
trouble with hyperpigmentation or keloids (raised scars), and
while laser hair removal will permanently reduce the number of
body hairs, it will not result in the permanent removal of all
hair.
Electrolysis is the process of removing hair permanently by
means of electrified needles. It is the only hair removal method
that is considered permanent.
What
determines the price?
The
amount of hair removed and areas covered. More area, more hair
removed.
How
much does it hurt?
Some have described the amount of pain as equivalent to that of
a “Band-Aid” being quickly removed, while others have compared
it to having the hairs plucked from the very depths of their
souls. If you are concerned about the amount of pain involved,
please take these points into consideration: skin is sensitized
by hormonal fluctuations, and by intake of certain “drugs” like
alcohol and caffeine. Waxing will feel INFINITELY more painful
immediately before, during, and for about three days after your
period. Waxing is also more painful after a triple espresso, and
just as painful after three martinis. Please DO NOT take aspirin
before your waxing service. Aspirin thins the blood, and may
prevent coagulation. Antihistamines can be taken prior to a
waxing service, and will effectively reduce the pain.
How
often should I get waxed?
The hair must be no shorter than 1/4 of an inch in length. Hair,
skin and nails grow faster in warm weather, so you may need to
be waxed every 4 to 5 weeks in the summer, depending on your
preferences. Hair grows much more slowly in the cooler months,
so you may need waxing services every 6 weeks, again, depending
on your preferences.
Does
the hair grow back?
Yes, though more sparsely over time with continued, regular
waxing.
The
care and feeding of your just-waxed areas
1. Just
for today (the day you are waxed), please DO NOT tan. NO TANNING
MEANS NO SUN EXPOSURE, TANNING BED USE, OR SUNLESS TANNING
APPLICATION in the area you are waxed. The reason behind this is
simple: your skin, in the area you are waxed, is exfoliated
unevenly (much more deeply in the area of waxing), and will tan
differently in the surrounding areas. Hyper pigmentation (uneven
skin darkening) is just not pretty, and can take YEARS (yes,
years) to get rid of. Just don’t tan. Just for today. Please.
2. Just for today (the day you are waxed), please do not subject
the waxed area to:
a. extremely warm water: this tends to irritate the waxed area
b. excessive touching: delivers bacteria to the affected area,
infection can occur
c. tight clothing: this tends to irritate the newly waxed area
3. Prevent ingrown hairs by exfoliating. Three days after body
waxing, begin gentle exfoliation with a washcloth. After seven
days, exfoliation with a loofah should be gently done in the
waxed area(s), and continued, at least twice a week thereafter.
Always remember to moisturize afterward, as the area will look
and feel much better if you do. If you get an ingrown hair, DO
NOT PICK AT IT!! Use a warm compress for 10 minutes, then gently
massage the area around the bump. Ingrown hairs have a tendency
toward scarring and hyper pigmentation if overly manipulated.
